Mitch Levison       Fired Up! Studio

As a ceramic artist my intention is to create pottery to be used in everyday activities.  Inspiration for my designs comes from my appreciation of the art of serving and dining, with attention to subtle details, experienced in Japan and other Asian countries when I was an educator in Japan in the early 1990’s.

I make my own glazes from natural wood ash and chemicals following formulas adapted from both salt and wood fire recipes, with a dash of intuition in achieving my distinctive and diverse results.

My kiln is electric, firing to cone 6-7 and my process applies a variety of glazes in multiple layers, often over textured areas of the pot, creating pleasing colors, interactions, and a variety of surfaces. Never are two pieces “the same” both through intention, and through the kiss of the kiln gods.

I create my pottery to be functional.   It is lead-free, microwavable, dishwasher safe, and can be used in contemporary oven preparation.
